Nothing hampers the appearance of a rested, vibrant person quite like dark circles under the eyes. These circles can give off the impression of someone who is fatigued, lethargic or unhappy.

Luckily, talented plastic surgeons like Dr. Joyesh Raj have a few ways to correct under-eye circles and help patients project energy and happiness. Here, Dr. Raj explains what causes dark circles and how he can fix them.

A Complex Problem

Dark circles are actually a complex issue that can be attributed to several circumstances. Some people have what is known as a tear trough deformity, where the skin thins underneath the eyes and the underlying muscles and fat become more prominent. A tear trough deformity can actually cast shadows that resemble dark circles under the eyes.

Other people have loose skin and deep wrinkles under the lower eyelid that contribute to the appearance of dark circles.

In order to comprehensively correct the problem, Dr. Raj must first evaluate the under-eye area between the lower lids and the upper cheeks, and identify the root cause of the circles. Then, he can recommend what can be done surgically or non-surgically to erase the circles.

Possible Treatment Options

It is often possible to soften the appearance of circles under the eyes with non-surgical, non-invasive treatment like injectables. This is usually true in younger patients with mild skin laxity and volume loss.

Dr. Raj can inject fillers under the eyes to soften mild trough deformities and smooth the transition between the lower eyelid and the upper cheek area. He can also inject Botox into crow’s feet to minimize the appearance of the wrinkles and lighten dark circles. Chemical peels can also be used to smooth out wrinkles under the eyes and around the edges of the eyes. Sometimes, Dr. Raj combines different components, like fillers and Botox, or fillers and a chemical peel, to address the problem.

Severe tear trough deformities or extremely loose skin typically need to be corrected surgically. For example, lower blepharoplasty involves trimming loose skin, removing excess fat and repositioning displaced fat pads to create more youthful looking eyelids.
