Rejuvenate Tired Eyes with Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty (also referred to as “eyelid lift”) is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of tired, weary eyes. Treating signs of aging around the eyes can give the entire face a brighter, more refreshed appearance.

If your eyes don’t reflect your youthful, lively spirit, you may see visible benefits from blepharoplasty. Read on as Dr. Joyesh Raj explains what the surgery entails.

What Blepharoplasty Can Accomplish

Blepharoplasty can improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both. Upper eyelid surgery focuses on lifting saggy, redundant skin on the upper eyelids that can droop over the upper lashline (and may interfere with the line of sight).

Lower eyelid surgery corrects lower eyelids that droop and expose the whites of the eyes under the iris. It can improve the appearance of dark circles or bags underneath the eyes that make the face look tired or sad. Also, lower eyelid surgery can smooth out wrinkles and puffiness in the eye area.

What Happens during Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis with anesthesia. It can take anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the extent of the treatment plan.

The surgical incisions are placed either inside the lids or within the natural creases and transitions of the skin, so that resulting scarring is inconspicuous. Through the incisions, Dr. Raj removes excess skin and tissue and repositions or removes fat pads as needed.

The recovery from eyelid surgery is normally short. The eye area is usually bruised and swollen, and patients may have mild discomfort that can be alleviated with prescription medication.

Most patients can resume work in five to seven days, and light exercise within a few weeks. The improvements to the eyelids should be apparent as soon as the swelling and bruising subside.

Although eyelid surgery does not stop the aging process, the results last for a very long time. Additional treatments, such as Botox, fillers and laser skin resurfacing, can complement and preserve the results of eyelid surgery.
